Audi A4 saloon
The Audi A4 saloon is one of three long-standing German contenders in the compact executive car class, the other being the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class. Japanese brand Lexus also fields a contender in the shape of the Lexus IS range and the Jaguar XE is also an important rival. Audi is known for excellent build quality and this latest A4 upholds that reputation.
It's powered by a choice of very efficient petrol and diesel engines. There are no less than 12 diesel versions available, including manual, automatic and four-wheel-drive variants. In contrast, petrol comes in just four varieties. Our favourite petrol A4 is the 2.0-litre TFSI S tronic automatic. It's more efficient than the manual, being capable of 55.4mpg and costing just £30 a year to tax. Our pick of the diesels is the 2.0-litre TDI Ultra S tronic, which can do 72.4mpg and costs £20 a year to tax.
The Audi A4 saloon is a comfortable car that's also fun to drive. It has accurate, well-weighted steering and the suspension is supple and absorbent. Its interior is typically clean and classy. It's roomy, too: three adults can sit in the back perfectly comfortably
There are three core trim levels – SE, Sport and S line – to which can be added a host of options, most of them expensive. Fortunately, they’re well enough equipped that you may not need to consult the options list at all. Our pick is SE, which features 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, three-zone climate control, a seven-inch colour display, cruise control and rear parking sensors among its many highlights.
Generally speaking, Audis have a good record for reliability and dependability, and we don’t expect the A4 to be any different. In terms of safety, Euro NCAP awarded the new A4 its maximum five-star rating, so you can be assured it will perform well in a crash.
There's plenty of safety equipment: even SE models having adaptive cruise control, post-collision braking, electronic stability control and six airbags.
