Audi’s RS Q3 is pretty unique in the market as it combines the blistering performance commonly associated with a hot hatchback and the style and practicalities of an SUV crossover.
As with all Audi Q3s above SE spec following the facelift, the RS Q3 gets a new retractable load cover along with a powered tailgate. LED headlights join distinctive rear indicators which sweep across the rear lights in the direction you’re intending to turn.You’ve also got the option of adaptive suspension, which Audi snappily calls RS Sports Suspension Plus. This works very impressively, blending comfortable ride quality in Comfort mode with level, stable and confident cornering in Dynamic. Audi is a premium German manufacturer, there’s a huge list of optional extras to choose from. You might consider applying some to the cabin, which can seem somewhat drab compared to other top-spec performance cars. A little too much has carried over from the normal Q3 in this respect.
Beneath the RS Q3’s imposing and distinctive interior, you will be thrilled to see the roaring TT RS’s 2.5-litre five-pot harnessed again in all its glory. This is impressive considering The Volkswagen Group’s compact platforms do not allow the fitting of RS multi-cylinder units. However, so strong is the RS’s international reputation for ferocious power, the top dogs weren’t prepared to compromise it with an underpowered engine.
Five-pot is what you get, and it’s a total joy to behold.
It boasts a whopping 306bhp and a considerable 310lb ft of torque. As insiders love to tell you, bhp and lb ft are always equal at 5250rpm;
The engine is paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox with a fairly long final ratio to help the RS Q3 achieve a CO2 output of 206g/km. You may be surprised to know that this highly nimble and smooth gearbox comes as standard.
As with smaller Audis and other Volkswagen Group cars, it rides on the Haldex four-wheel drive system, and as the old saying goes: if it ain’t broke don’t try to fix it. The RS Q3 carries this efficient system through seamlessly, adding fluid handling to tame the beast inside.
suspension is MacPherson struts at the front, a four-link set-up at the rear, coil springs, and if that wasn’t enough, passive dampers all round. Combine this with ventilated discs front and rear, which carry the rarely seen but highly effective ‘wave technology’. Traditionally, ‘Wavy’ brake discs are a more common sight on motorcycles and mountain bikes; but always ahead of the curve, Audi has applied this innovation to 4X4 and it works brilliantly. When waves are added to the outer edge of the disc, weight is reduced but the circumference is unaffected, meaning good heat dissipation is rigorously upheld. Further, as the pads overlap, missing segments get plentiful air, which adds additional cooling. Ultimately, Audi’s amalgamation of cutting-edge performance, aesthetics, and a refined interior means the RS Q3 is one of the hottest motors on the market now. Once again, Audi proves itself deserving of its mighty reputation.
